Okay, I admit it ... I'm a child of the sixties, and Granola was just about our national foodstuff. But not long after, with marriage, children, and the usual adult responsibilities, the granola faded into distant memory, along with the gypsy skirts, beads, and peace symbols. Instead, we had Frosted Flakes, Trix and other popular brands.
In my 20s I developed celiac disease, so anything made from wheat, barley rye or oats was totally off limits. Gluten-free products are frightfully expensive, so cereal for me was out of the question. Imagine my suprise when the Canadian Medical Association, a few years ago, okay'd OATS for people with celiac disease. Following that, so did the British, Australian, and New Zealand Medical Associations. (N.B. The American Medical Association has not yet approved oats for celiac patients, but I can attest to experiencing absolutely no difficulties with dietary oats. Be sure to check with your physician.)
Earlier this year, mindful that the Brits declared it safe, I began looking for a purely oat product -- i.e., one not laced with wheat.
And what do you know? There, on the shelf next to the Quaker Oats was good old-fashioned granola. Now not every granola is 'pure' in an oat or oat/rice combination. Sometimes there is added barley, MSG, or even the ubiquitous 'moderated food starch' ... but Cascadian Farms Cinnamon Raisin Granola seemed to be, at least from the ingredients perspective, a good possibility.
I tried it immediately. The result? ... I've become an addict, plain and simple. This granola is satisfyingly crunchy, and it's toasted to the perfect degree, neither too light nor too dark. The flavors of the oats 'n rice, along with the molasses and cinnamon, is outstanding. Everyone in our household loves it... adults, kids, and even the cats. As an extra benefit, it's certified organic.
There is one anomaly I want to make note of, one that I consider amusing rather than annoying. I use Amazon's wonderful subscription service and receive 6 boxes of the product every month (there's a 15% price discount with this service and NO SHIPPING CHARGE, so be sure to check it out). In opening box after box of this cereal, I have found that occasionally some packages contain overly large amounts of raisins, while others have, quite literally, only 2 or 3 raisins in the entire 17oz. box. This isn't a problem for me, because we always have raisins on hand and I can just add some if I choose to. Many times I don't, simply because the cereal stands so well on its own. I don't think this unevenness is a serious thing, but I did want to alert you.
I'd be lost without this cereal... it has truly become a staple for me. Later on I'm going to sample their Honey Oat cereal, too, and I expect it to be every bit the equal in taste and quality of the Cinnamon Raisin variety.
Please, by all means, try this brand ... and try out Amazon's great subscription service as well. You won't be disappointed -- I promise!
